U.S. children deficient in Vitamin D

This recent paper published in the journal Pediatrics concludes: “25(OH)D deficiency is common in the general US pediatric population and is associated with adverse cardiovascular risks.” It is included in a review of three studies published in Journal Watch that states: “Many U.S. children and adolescents have low vitamin D levels, and such levels are associated with adverse physiologic processes.”

Millions of U.S. children have suboptimal levels of Vitamin D

What could be more important for the flu season? According to this new research published in the journal Pediatrics, “On the basis of a nationally representative sample of US children aged 1 to 11 years, millions of children may have suboptimal levels of 25(OH)D….” Since needs vary among individuals, the only sure way to know is the method used in this study: serum levels of 25-hydroxy Vitamin D (25(OH)D).
